Milieu archive

Milieu archives temporalities, exploring the transformative potential of material interactions through the sampling and mapping of geological inscriptions. The archive functions as a living repository of material states, adapted to site conditions and remaining open to reconfiguration over time.
It develops through material animacies that hold ongoing historicities and material possibilities within already invested ecological and energy systems. The ecosystem is addressed as a source of already existing energies and as an active material condition shaped by excavation, displacement, compression, erosion, and repair.
“Matter is not a support, location, referent, or source of sustainability for discourse. Matter is not immutable or passive. It does not require the mark of an external force like culture or history to complete it. Matter is always already an ongoing historicity.” (Barad)
This opens a gap for rethinking how material differentiation emerges, revealing relational forces and disrupting static ontological classifications. Material properties are seen as emerging through relational exchanges and dynamic ecologies.

The archive highlights the transformative potential of engaging with living organisms, fostering ecological thinking, and co-evolving with the living world. It remains a growing body, discrete yet open, where material differentiation continues to emerge through relational exchange.
